Privacy Policy
RelayNest helps families coordinate care after a hospital discharge. That means you trust us with sensitive information about someone you care for. This policy explains what we collect, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. It applies to the RelayNest app for iPhone and iPad and to our website at relaynest.app.
The short version
- We never sell your information and never use it for advertising.
- Care information is visible only to the people you invite to a workspace.
- AI features are off until you turn them on, and you can turn them off any time.
- Data from Apple Health is never sent to AI providers or used for marketing.
- You can delete your account from inside the app.
1. Information we collect
Account information
Your email address and password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider), or the name and email Apple or Google share if you sign in with them. During setup you can add your name, phone number, your relationship to the person you care for, and your preferred language.
Care information you enter
The information you and the people you invite add to a care workspace: the patient's first name and last initial, age or date of birth, discharge date and reason, condition summary, hospital name, medications and dose logs, appointments, tasks, symptoms, questions, notes, and care plans.
Documents and photos
Discharge paperwork, medication lists, and other files or photos you choose to upload.
Health data from Apple Health or Health Connect
Only if you choose to connect it, and read-only: blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose, blood oxygen, weight, respiratory rate, and body temperature. See section 5.
Technical information
A push-notification token for your device, crash and error reports (filtered to exclude care and health information), and a security log recording that sensitive actions occurred — for example that an account was deleted or a document was downloaded — without their content.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, or advertising identifiers, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
2. How we use information
- To provide RelayNest: store your care workspace and show it to the people you invite, according to the role you give them.
- To send reminders and notifications you've enabled. Push, email, and text messages contain only a generic prompt such as “You have a new update in RelayNest” — the details stay inside the app, behind sign-in.
- To keep accounts and data secure, investigate misuse, and meet legal obligations.
- To fix crashes and improve reliability, using filtered error reports.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
3. AI features
Some optional features use artificial intelligence: turning discharge paperwork you scan into a draft medication list, summarizing instructions in plain language, suggesting questions for an appointment, turning a note into tasks, and translating a care plan.
- They are off until you turn them on. The app explains what will be shared and asks for your permission first.
- What is sent: only the text or document involved in the feature you use. Patient names and hospital names are not included in translation requests.
- Who receives it: Anthropic, PBC, our AI provider, which processes it to return a result. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models. Anthropic may keep it for a limited period under its own retention policy.
- You stay in control: AI results are drafts. Nothing is added to your workspace until you review and approve it.
- You can turn AI features off at any time under More → AI features.
4. Who we share information with
People you invite
Members of a care workspace can see its information according to their role. Owners decide who is invited and can remove people at any time.
Service providers
We use these companies to run RelayNest. They may only use your information to provide their service to us:
- Google Cloud / Firebase — sign-in, database, file storage, and server functions. Data is stored in the United States.
- Vercel — hosting for our website.
- Anthropic — AI features, only after you give permission.
- Resend — email notifications (generic message only).
- Amazon Web Services — text-message notifications (generic message only).
- Expo — push-notification delivery (generic message only).
- Sentry — crash and error reporting, filtered to exclude care and health information.
- Apple and Google — if you choose to sign in with them.
To check for possible drug interactions, our servers look up medication names in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's public OpenFDA database. Only the drug names are sent, from our servers, with no information that identifies you or the patient.
Legal reasons
We may disclose information if required by law, to protect someone's safety, or to protect RelayNest's rights. If RelayNest is involved in a merger or acquisition, this policy continues to apply to information transferred.
5. Apple Health and Health Connect
If you connect Apple Health (or Health Connect on Android):
- We only read the measurements listed in section 1, and only to show them in your care workspace to the people you have invited.
- We never use health data for advertising, marketing, or data mining, never sell it, and never share it with data brokers.
- We never send health data from Apple Health or Health Connect to AI providers.
- You can stop sharing at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → RelayNest.
6. How long we keep information, and deleting it
We keep your information while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from More → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your profile and notifications, removes you from workspaces you share, and permanently deletes any workspace where you are the only owner — including its uploaded documents. Workspaces you share with another owner remain available to them.
For recovery from accidental loss, we keep encrypted backups: daily backups for 7 days and weekly backups for 14 weeks. Deleted information is therefore fully gone from our systems within about 98 days. The security log keeps a record that actions such as an account deletion happened, but not the content of your care information. Server operational logs, which contain no care information, are kept for 30 days.
7. How we protect information
- Encryption in transit (HTTPS) and at rest.
- Access limited to the members of each workspace, according to their role.
- Optional two-factor authentication, an app lock using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode, and automatic sign-out after 15 minutes of inactivity.
- A security log of sensitive actions, and administrative tools that do not display your care information.
No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect your information and will notify you as required by law if a breach affects it.
8. Your choices and rights
- View and correct your information directly in the app.
- Delete your account and data from inside the app (section 6).
- Turn AI features off, disconnect Apple Health, and change notification settings at any time.
Depending on where you live — for example California, Washington, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, or Nevada — you may have the right to know what personal and consumer health data we hold, to access, correct, or delete it, to withdraw consent, and to appeal our decision on a request. We do not sell personal data or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. To make a request, email privacy@relaynest.app. We will verify your request and respond within the time the law requires, and we will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.
Consumer health data
The care and health information described in section 1 is “consumer health data” under laws such as Washington's My Health My Data Act. We collect it from you, from people you invite, and — if you connect it — from Apple Health or Health Connect. We use it only to provide the coordination features you request, share it only as described in section 4, and never sell it.
9. HIPAA
RelayNest is a service families use directly. Unless we have signed an agreement with your healthcare provider, the information you enter is not “protected health information” under HIPAA. This policy, and the laws described in section 8, govern how we handle it.
10. Children
RelayNest accounts are for adults 18 and older, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through accounts. A parent or guardian may enter care information about a child in their care; we process that information on the guardian's behalf.
11. Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the effective date. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and we will ask for your permission again where the law or our AI consent requires it.
