What Happened to CareZone — and What to Use Instead
If you came looking for the CareZone app, the short answer is that it is gone, and it has been for a while. This page explains what happened, whether your data can be recovered, and what families actually use now — including where RelayNest fits and where it does not.
What happened to CareZone
CareZone was a free medication-management app with a feature families loved: you could photograph a pill bottle and it would add the medication to a shared list, which relatives could see. It also held documents, notes and a calendar.
In 2020, Walmart acquired CareZone’s technology platform, patents and product team in a deal reported at around $200 million. The technology became the Walmart Wellness app, and CareZone users were asked to migrate.
Walmart retired the Wellness app on 31 January 2023. According to Walmart’s own help page, accounts that were not migrated were deactivated and the personal data removed from Walmart’s servers.
Can I get my CareZone data back?
Realistically, no. Walmart’s help page states that users who never migrated cannot recover their CareZone data, and the export window for Wellness closed with the app’s retirement in 2023. If you still have an old phone with the app installed and never updated, it is worth checking whether anything is readable locally — but do not count on it.
The practical path is to rebuild the list from the pill bottles themselves, and from your pharmacy, which keeps a dispensing history and can print it for you on request.
What people actually miss about it
When people look for a CareZone replacement, they are usually missing one of four distinct things. They need different tools, which is why no single app feels like a drop-in replacement:
- Scanning a bottle to build a list. Several medication apps do this now.
- Reminders to take a dose. That is a pill-reminder app’s job.
- A shared list the family can see. This is the part most apps do badly.
- Somewhere to keep documents and notes alongside the medications.
What families use now
Honestly, by what you actually need:
| If you mainly need… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Reminders to take a dose | A dedicated pill-reminder app. Medisafe is the best known, though it moved to a paid model in 2026. |
| A shared list after a hospital stay | RelayNest (this site) — see below for what it does and does not do. |
| Organising volunteers and meals | Lotsa Helping Hands, a free shared calendar for friends and family. |
| Keeping relatives updated on progress | CaringBridge, a non-profit, free to use. |
| Prescription prices and delivery | Your pharmacy’s own app, or GoodRx for pricing. |
Where RelayNest fits
RelayNest is built for one specific situation: the weeks after a hospital discharge, when an older adult comes home with a changed medication list and a family suddenly has to coordinate. It overlaps with CareZone on the part most people miss — the shared list — and adds the thing CareZone never did, which is showing you what the hospital changed.
| What you want | CareZone did it | RelayNest does it |
|---|---|---|
| Shared medication list the family can see | Yes | Yes |
| Flags what hospital started, stopped or changed | No | Yes |
| Scan paperwork to build a draft list | Pill bottles | Discharge paperwork |
| Record that a dose was given | Yes | Yes |
| Alarms reminding you to take a dose | Yes | No |
| Appointments, tasks and warning signs | Partly | Yes |
| Roles, so a distant sibling can view but not edit | No | Yes |
| Document storage | Yes | Yes |
| Pharmacy ordering and delivery | Yes | No |
| Price | Free | Free |
RelayNest is probably not what you want if…
- You want alarms telling you to take a pill. RelayNest does not have per-dose reminders. It reminds you about appointments and unresolved questions, and it logs doses you record — but it will not buzz at 8pm. Use a pill-reminder app for that; the two work fine side by side.
- You want to order or price prescriptions. We do not touch pharmacy fulfilment.
- You want an Android app. There is an iPhone app; on Android the web app works in any browser, but there is no Play Store listing yet.
- You are managing only your own medications. RelayNest is built around a family sharing one workspace. On your own, it is more structure than you need.
If what you miss is the shared list. RelayNest gives your family one workspace for medications, appointments, tasks and documents, and automatically flags what changed during a hospital stay. Free for the whole care circle, with no subscription.

Common questions
Is CareZone still available in 2026?
No. Walmart acquired CareZone’s technology in 2020 and moved it into the Walmart Wellness app, which Walmart retired on 31 January 2023. Articles published since then that still list CareZone as a current option are out of date.
What happened to my CareZone data?
Walmart’s help page states that accounts not migrated to Walmart Wellness were deactivated and the personal data removed from its servers, and that users who did not migrate cannot get their CareZone data back. Rebuilding from the pill bottles and a pharmacy-printed dispensing history is the practical route.
What is the closest free replacement for CareZone?
It depends which part you miss. For dose alarms, a dedicated pill-reminder app. For a shared family medication list, especially after a hospital stay, RelayNest is free and close to what CareZone offered, though it has no per-dose reminders. For volunteer scheduling, Lotsa Helping Hands.
